Social Justice Committee

The Social Justice Committee is an integral component of the Temple community's ongoing work of Tikkun Olam. As we draw on our rich Jewish values and teachings, we become engaged in the challenges of creating the kind of society we wish to bequeath to those who follow us.

The underlying premise of our work is the Torah's call for justice. This includes:

  • Educating ourselves and the congregation on issues of concern at the local, state or national level
  • Promoting advocacy on these issues
  • Working in coalitions with other faith communities as well as like-minded organizations

The basis of much of our work is informed by resolutions adopted by the Religious Action Center Commission on Social Action, an arm of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the Central Conference of American Rabbis. www.rac.org.
We received the 2011 URJ FAIN Award for excellence in our 2 1/2 year project called Preserving Our Planet. (POP).  (Click here to read about all the aspects of the project.)

In addition we work on issues of local concern to the greater Asheville and Western North Carolina communities. Currently we are engaged in issues of Economic Justice, particularly focusing on the problems of homelessness and improving education.

The committee has also worked on issues of separation of church and state, race relations, economic justice, affordable housing, human rights and health care.

The committee welcomes new members and the experiences they bring to enrich our work and learning.
