Fascinating Brunch Event Sunday, February 26th at 10 AM
Noah Leavitt and Helen Kim, son and daughter-in-law of our own Judy Leavitt, in town for Judy’s Bat Mitzvah, will present a fascinating examination of the relatively new phenomenon in Jewish-American life, Asian-Jewish marriages. Both professors at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., they have recently completed, and published, an in depth sociological examination of this important new reality. Their publication,”JewAsian: Race, Religion, and Identity for America’s Newest Jews” explores how Asian-Jewish couples and their families fit into broader contexts of multiracial identity and religiosity the United States, as well as of intermarriage historically. One surprising finding in the study was that the assumption people make about mixed race kids who “don’t look Jewish” don’t have a robust Jewish identity and practice is wrong. People make wildly inaccurate assumptions. Another surprising and important finding was that Judaism and Jewish culture tend to predominate in these mixed households, with Asian spouses being on board, with bringing up the children in the Jewish tradition. Obviously this program promises to be both enlightening and entertaining, and right in line with the Reform Movement’s policies of outreach and openness.
So, put it on your calendar, and enjoy a delicious brunch of lox and bagels and all the trimmings, scrambled eggs, fruit juice , pastries, fruits, and beverages. If you’re planning on attending, please send Arnie Sgan an email to email@example.com
