Arguing With God
According to author Anson Laytner, “arguing with God is a Jewish tradition.” Over the course of four Sundays, we will examine how disputes with God have been a persistent theme of Jewish life: for Abraham, Moses, Job, Jonah, and others. In addition to giving a close reading to some familiar (and less familiar) sections of the Tanach, we will also examine how some twentieth century writers and thinkers have dealt with the issue after the Holocaust. There will be a set of readings assigned before the class to help stimulate discussion.
