Congregation Beth HaTephila

An Engaging, Inclusive, Reform Congregation in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Preschool (2-4 year olds)

Our preschool program is grounded in the belief that our sense of self in relation to community begins early. We provide preschool programming each Sunday for children from infancy through four years, filling out mornings with play, exploration, creativity, song, and movement — and providing a sense of fun and belonging to our youngest students and their parents.

  • K’tanim (Hebrew for Little Ones) – K’tanim is our program for babies (0 – 24 months) and their guardians. Offering guidance in parenting and teaching Judaism in the home — this hour-and-a-half long class uses a combination movement, music, outdoor exploration and relaxed free play to help our youngest community members and their families to relax, enjoy, and find their way into learning and community that is both comfortable and fun.
  • D’vorim (Hebrew for Bees) – D’vorim is our program for students who are three to four years old. Each week, we introduce a new unit — either based on a Jewish Holiday, season, or community building concept (friendship, peace, sharing, etc.) and weave the concept into movement, music, art, and free play. Throughout the year, we slowly introduce Hebrew vocabulary, which we weave into our weekly lessons and conversations!
  • Tziporim (Hebrew for Birds) – Tziporim is our pre-K program for four year olds. During this year, we teach Jewish Holidays and Shabbat through movement, art, and play. We also introduce regular themes of Shabbat, Tzedakah (charity), and Mitzvot (good deeds) so that our children come to understand through experiential learning the rhythm and the beauty of Jewish life.
  • Music – Each week in Religious School, we open our day in song during a part of our day we call “Kehila Tephila” (community prayer). Students, teachers, madrichim (teaching assistants), and parents join together in joyful songs (and often dance!) to get our day started right! Songleading is provided by our school’s Religious Education Director, Seth Kellam and Billy Jonas, our Music Specialist, who visit each class every week to infuse our learning day with a little more harmony and joy.
