CELEBRATE Martin Luther King Jr. WEEKEND

When the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. addressed the American Jewish Congress in May 1958, he explained that “our unity is born of our common struggle for centuries, not only to rid ourselves of bondage, but to make oppression of any people by other an impossibility.”  Jewish tradition is replete with customs and commandments to protect and lift up the underprivileged and the vulnerable, and the justice we seek is the same justice that Martin Luther King Jr. sought for his children and the rest of society.

We can learn from his dedication to the civil rights movement and the advances in racial equality in the United States that he facilitated: we can continue to dedicate ourselves to the fight against injustices that still exist in our society today, manifesting themselves in issues of poverty, hunger, education, health care, housing and elsewhere.  Through service to our community and a commitment to tikkun olam, we can help to make our world a better place, Dr. King's true dream.

Hineni: Understanding Racism as Jews

The LMTO Workgroup on Racial Justice has completed its first series of Zoom conversations around issues of racism and anti-Semitism.  We heard thought-provoking presentations and had insightful conversations around issues of race.  If you missed sessions and want to explore further readings and media, go to the LMTO Hineni website at sites.google.com/view/cbht-tikkun-olam/home.  We invite community participation in our post-sessions survey to find out what you would like to see developed as next steps: www.surveymonkey.com/r/LMYZQF2.
