Racism, Anti-Semitism, and Our Responses:

A CBHT Series of Programs

The LMTO Workgroup on Racial Justice is developing a series of conversations and discussion groups for the fall around the issue of racism and anti-Semitism.  We expect to host a program via Zoom on approximately one evening every two weeks, with accompanying reading and media that we will ask participants to read/view.  Possible topics may include:

  • How racism and anti-Semitism fit together
  • Are Jews white?
  • Race and class
  • Systemic racism
  • Crossing racial lines

During Yom Kippur, we acknowledged that we have all sinned.  This is an opportunity to discuss how we, our ancestors, and our communities have sinned and the healing we can all do.  Look for more details in the weekly eblasts as we finalize these programs.  We hope you can join us!

I Feel Safe at MANNA – Join Us!

By Wendy Capelouto

  • Our Tikkun Olam committee has once again begun volunteering at Manna Foodbank. We meet the first Friday of the month for 2 hours, from 1:00-3:00 PM.
  • Manna is following the state-wide ordinance of wearing masks once you enter the facility. In addition to masks, Manna supports proper social distancing of 6 feet and hand washing.  We also wear disposable gloves while working.
  • As an additional precaution (not required by the state or Manna) I choose to wear goggles for an extra amount of protection. I feel safe at all times.  The Manna staff is very appreciative of our time.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact me at: tkmanna@bethhatephila.org and I will include you in our monthly email reminder.

Room In The Inn (RITI) Update

The RITI women, along with many other homeless people, are still being housed at the Red Roof Inn during the pandemic.  Several of the women have been moved to their own apartments.  While congregations are not currently responsible for housing or meals for RITI or other homeless people, the need is still great for continuing their support.  The Asheville Poverty Initiative is trying its best to take care of meals.  The LMTO Committee is supporting their work and arranged for meals from Cooking with Comedy Catering, a Black-owned business in Asheville, to provide dinners for the homeless on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.  We intend to continue supporting some meals as we can.
