LMTO 2020-21 Accomplishments

Thanks to all committee members and congregants for supporting our continuing work.  Join us to repair the world:

  • Voter Engagement Initiative informed and activated our congregation towards absentee voting and getting out the vote, tying into the work of RAC’s Every Voice Every Vote, including some help with postcards, text and phone banking.
  • LMTO Workgroup on Racial Justice supported 4 virtual workshops through JCRC during the summer on Being Better Allies, and then provided 5 virtual workshops for our congregants during the fall on Understanding Racism.  This work is continuing with planning for 2021-22 tying to the RAC Racial Justice Campaign.  We also participate in the Asheville Anti-Racism Coordinating Committee of JCRC.
  • Room In The Inn (RITI) was suspended due to COVID-19 but LMTO supported 6 dinners (catered by a Black caterer) for the homeless through Homeward Bound.
  • Monthly MANNA helpers was restarted and helped pack food once a month at MANNA.  We had 6-10 congregants help each month since August.
  • Annual High Holiday MANNA Food Collection was another successful year with record financial donations, going much further in providing meals for the hungry.
  • Head Start Tutors and Books was suspended but hopes to resume fall 2021.
  • Sanctuary & Immigration: We continue to monitor the situation with immigrants and refugees and ways we can help in the future.
  • Monthly Meals at Vets Quarters continued (after a break) with congregant assistance.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Shabbat, while not specifically with St. James AME Church, involved active participation in a state-wide virtual shabbat.
  • Interfaith Initiative for Social Justice continues discussions between the 20+ faith communities involved, sharing expertise and ideas.
  • LMTO Shabbat, virtual this year, honored b’nai mitzvah students for their mitzvah projects with students telling of their good works.
  • Climate Change: We are beginning conversations about solar panels for CBHT.
  • Advocacy efforts continued through Menorah articles, Tikkun Olam Alerts, and work with the Carolina Jews for Justice.
  • Donations were given this year to Veterans monthly meal expenses, the Valley Street Festival, the JFS Food Pantry, Vecinos Farmworker Program, Beloved Asheville street medics for the homeless, and Homeward Bound.

Urge Your Senators to Make the Promise of Democracy Real for Us All

The right to vote is fundamental in a democracy, and we must ensure that elections are accessible for all.

Urge your Senators to support legislation like The For the People Act (H.R.1/S.1) that will protect the freedom to vote by establishing national standards for federal elections and ensuring that voter registration and voting options are equally accessible across the United States.                                           (from RAC.org)

Please call Senator Burr at 202-224-3154 and Senator Tillis at 202-224-6342 or email through rac.org/take-action/legislative-action-center
