CBHT and The Reform Movement's Racial Justice Campaign

As Reform Jews, we are called on to continue the fight for racial justice and fulfill the sacred work of Tikkun Olam, creating a more just, compassionate, and whole world.  The RAC Racial Justice campaign addresses systemic racism by promoting policy change on the national level to ensure the U.S. federal Freedom to Vote.  It also focuses on encouraging members of the Reform Jewish community to do essential Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) and antiracism work within our communities and ourselves.

Following the High Holidays, just as we heed the call of the shofar, RAC will gather on October 6th at 8 PM to continue heeding the call of our Reform Jewish values to work toward racial justice.  We will learn what the Reform Movement meetings with U.S. Senators accomplished, get the latest news on the progress of Freedom to Vote bills in Congress, and prepare for our next actions to continue pushing Congress to pass voting rights legislation. We encourage you to join this Zoom gathering; register at urj.org/calendar/freedom-vote-heeding-call.

At CBHT, the LMTO Committee is continuing to work to promote our ability to do REDI and antiracism work.  Look for opportunities soon for our congregation to do collective readings, listen to speakers, and view videos that will expand our understandings.  In addition, we expect to begin a DEI Working Group to assess CBHT’s inclusiveness and identify goals and action plans towards creating an inclusive community for individuals and families from a wide range of backgrounds.  Please let us know if you are interested in joining us in any of this planning.

Vets Shelter Meal Serving

On behalf of the Tikkun Olam committee at Congregation Beth HaTephila I am looking for volunteers to help prepare and serve lunch at the Veterans Restoration Quarters (https://www.abccm.org/veterans-restoration-quarters).  This wonderful opportunity is on the third Thursday of each month, from about 9:30-12:30 AM.  The men are vaccinated, and Covid restrictions are in place.  It has been a gracious opportunity for us, but more help is needed.  Please let me know if you are interested in lending a hand to those who have served us.

Mena Kates, tkmonthlymeals@bethhatephila.org.

CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOK COLLECTION

Please drop off new or gently used children’s picture book in the tubs at the temple.  These will be donated to groups that support underserved families who do not have access to books.  Books in the homes of children is a strong predictor of future academic success.

Financial donations will also be accepted to purchase books for particular groups.  Checks may be made out to CBHT Tikkun Olam with Book Collection on the Note line.  For further information contact Jenny Mercer at mersweet222@gmail.com.
